Claims Management

Arrow Mutual Liability Insurance Company prides itself as providing conscientious and thorough claim handling services. The experienced staff of claim professionals provide immediate action once a claim has been reported.

The process involves the dynamic coordination of employers, injured employees, medical providers, rehabilitation case managers, and attorneys in an orchestrated and integrated fashion. The roles each play in the claim process must be skillfully managed by the claim manager.

Arrow Mutual takes insurance fraud seriously and each claim is monitored and appropriate action is taken if necessary. Employer involvement and communication is a key ingredient regarding the proper handling of losses.

Arrow Mutual partners with the employer with the hope of an overall, cost effective and timely conclusion of losses.

Utilization Review

Effective July 1, 1993, all workers’ compensation insurers are required to undertake utilization review of injured workers health care services. The Utilization Review and Quality Assessment Program, 452 CMR 6.00 et seq applies to all claims irrespective of date of injury, for health care services rendered on or after October 1, 1993.

Arrow Mutual Liability Insurance Company is an approved Utilization Review Agent by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Industrial Accidents, since 1994. Arrow UR is in good standing with the DIA and has had no violations imposed on them.

Arrow Mutual’s Utilization Review Department will perform Utilization Review of all medical treatment of workers’ compensation claims in accordance with MGL Ch 152, Section 13 and 30 of the Massachusetts Workers’ Compensation Act and the Massachusetts Utilization Review Regulations, 452 CMR 6.00 et seq. This process is being implemented to assure that the appropriate medical care and treatment is medically necessary and appropriate and is being maintained.

Arrow Mutual Utilization Review Nurse must hold a current RN license in MA, and are required to obtain CEU’s for their MA RN on an ongoing basis.

Arrow Mutual’s current Medical Director is MA licensed, with Board Certification by American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. His duties include providing first level reviews, writing internal guidelines, the QA of the UR program, and providing in-service education to the UR staff.

Safety & Loss Prevention

Arrow Mutual Liability Insurance Company provides Safety & Loss Prevention services to our policyholders to help develop strategies to prevent workplace injuries and illness. Our Safety Department staff are Certified Safety Professionals (CSP) and they provide many services including:

  • Onsite training & educational programs
  • Attending safety committee meetings
  • Assisting and education regarding OSHA regulations
  • Egonomics awareness
  • Assist with recommended facility goals and strategies for loss prevention & safety

Arrow Mutual operates similar to a group captive for large employers in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island with $100,000 or more in premium, working with selected companies in all classifications. Arrow is an insurance carrier that is best suited for “safety conscious” employers. A true mutual company existing solely for the benefit of its policyholders, Arrow Mutual seeks to remain financially sound, while it maximizes the returns to policyholders each year.

Arrow’s Unique Financial Model

All policies are issued each year on January 1st at the manual rates established by the Division of Insurance. Premiums are payable in 12 equal monthly installments. 

Arrow is unique among workers’ compensation carriers in that we use retrospective rating plan as a method of returning substantial premiums to policyholders based on their own experience.  In addition, Arrow pays three dividends each year:

  • Special Dividend
  • Investment Earnings Dividend
  • Underwriting Dividend

Total returns to Policyholders with good loss ratios have ranged between 28% – 31%
